About the book: When the new, brutal Superior banishes Nomi from Bellaqua, she finds herself powerless and headed towards her all-but-certain death. Her only hope is to find her sister, Serina, on the prison island of Mount Ruin. But when Nomi arrives, it is not the island of conquered, broken women that they expected. It is an island in the grip of revolution, and Serina--polite, submissive Serina--is its leader.

Betrayal, grief, and violence have changed both sisters, and the women of Mount Ruin have their sights set on revenge beyond the confines of their island prison. They plan to sweep across the entire kingdom, issuing in a new age of freedom for all. But first they'll have to get rid of the new Superior, and only Nomi knows how.

Tracy Banghart grew up in rural Maryland and spent her summers on a remote island in northern Ontario. All that isolation and lovely scenery gave her the time to read voraciously and the inspiration to write her own stories. Always a bit of a nomad, Tracy now travels the world Army-wife style with her husband, son, and several mischievous fur babies. She wrote Grace and Fury while living in Hawaii.

The Louisville Story Program strengthens the bonds of community by amplifying unheard voices and untold stories. Through rigorous writing and oral history workshops, and with professional editorial support, participating LSP authors from historically underrepresented communities document the richness of lived experience in Louisville communities from the inside out, and in their own words. Their work is published in professionally designed books, exhibits, and radio programs that promote dialogue across the community and increase awareness of overlooked aspects of Louisville's culture and history. Our authors are paid for their work, and we leverage their achievements into as many additional professional, educational, cultural, and social opportunities for them as possible.

Deb Spera

Thursday, June 20, 2019 - 7:00pm
2720 Frankfort Ave.
Louisville, KY 40206

About the book: It’s 1924 South Carolina and the region is still recovering from the infamous boll weevil infestation that devastated the land and the economy. Gertrude, a mother of four, must make an unconscionable decision to save her daughters from starvation or die at the hands of an abusive husband. Retta is navigating a harsh world as a first-generation freed slave, still employed by the Coles, influential plantation proprietors who once owned her family. Annie is the matriarch of the Coles family and owner of the Branchville Sewing Circle, a business left to her by her father when he passed.

Told in the pitch-perfect voices of Gertrude, Retta, and Annie, Call Your Daughter Home is an audacious, timeless story about the power of family, deep-buried secrets, and the ferocity of motherhood.

Deb Spera was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. She currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two of her three children. She owns her own television company, One-Two Punch Productions, and has executive produced such shows as Criminal Minds, Army Wives, Reaper, and Finding Carter. She is a finalist for The Montana Prize in fiction and a two-time finalist for the Kirkwood literary prize. Her work has been published in Sixfold, Garden and Gun, The Wascana Review, and L.A. Yoga Journal. She’s the co-writer of the play, On The Road To Kitty Hawk, produced by Actors Theater Of Louisville. Call Your Daughter Home is her first novel.

Join us to celebrate the 2019 publication of the authoritative two-volume collection of Berry’s influential nonfiction, What I Stand On: Collected Essays 1969-2017(Library of America) to discuss the damage done by today’s industrial agriculture and how Berry’s ideas enhance the public discourse on saving our natural resources and rural communities.
